I've seen a lot of people online asking about the D5100 Battery Grip...questions like "Should I mod a D3100 grip to fit the D5100?", "Is Nikon going to release a battery grip?", and "When can we expect a 3rd party grip?".
To answer your questions...the D5100 Battery Grip from MeiKe is available on eBay currently, so you don't have to buy the D3100 grip and mod it. Prices range anywhere from $23 to $50. As far as a Nikon made grip for the D5100, I highly doubt that will ever happen.
I just received my battery grip in the mail today, and for the most part I like it. The grip is built pretty much like the MeiKe D3100 grip so any review on that grip can pretty much translate to the D5100 grip.
Yes, it's made of cheap plastic, but that's something I'm willing to overlook due to the comfort of the grip. I have big hands, and anyone who has big hands and a D5100 can agree that there's not much room to grip on the camera.

The fit is snug...no wiggle at all. The finish does a good job of matching the camera's body and doesn't look totally out of place. The battery door is flimsy and rattles, but some thin adhesive foam will fix that. The vertical shutter release works well, half press for auto focus and full press for shutter release. It's just a shame there must be a wire connected from the grip to the GPS port in order for it to work.

Overall I feel this grip is a must for those of us with larger hands or photographers who want to pack more battery life. If you can overlook the cheap plastic and vertical shutter wire, this grip really isn't all that bad, especially for around $20.

thanks for the review man, I know this post is a little delayed but I own a D5100 myself and have been thinking about getting something like this. The wire to the GPS port though worries me

I have the battery grip too.. Fits perfectly and looks good to my d5100.. The annoying part only is the wire that connects to the port.. So i just keep it and dont use the wire..disadvantage is you cant use the 2nd shutter.. But overall its nice to have..

Battery grips JUST LOOK SO AWESOME on the cameras. hehe
And the extra gripping space and a vertical shutter button is soooo handy as well.
BUT the one thing i miss from the older film camera days was the sound of the motor drives, it was amazing to hear the camera Whacking away at 12 frames per second and the motor werrring. OHH and the weight of the older motor drives, which required 12 "AA" batteries.
We have it so nice now. much less weight. INSTANT satisfaction, knowing if we did or didnt get the shot. LOVE IT!!!!!!
OKAY OKAY I'll stop rambling on... ~ HEHEHE have a good day all,
Russ
