COMMANDER MODE -
Unlike its predecessor, the D3100 has the ability to control off-camera flash units using its pop-up flash. This will work with SB-900, SB-800 (discontinued), and SB-600 flash unit. This feature has been around in the mid-level Nikon DSLRs and it is fantastic. Unlike a D3s or D3x, you don’t need to have a controller flash unit mounted to your hotshoe. Simply pop up your flash and you can control not just one, but a series of flash units. I’m really glad to see Nikon bring this feature to the entry-level cameras because it really allows photographers to explore more options in creative lighting.

Als je het pdf handboek van de D3100 bekijkt: gewoon niet waar.

Sterker nog: als je in de aangehaalde website (lees me-too-advertentievehikel) verder leest staat een soortgelijk commentaar bij de reacties.

Die moeite heb ik me niet eens genomen. Heb een D3100 gehad en dit ontbreken hiervan was 1 van de redenen waarom ik nu een D7000 heb.

Ik weet het, het spreekt het handboek tegen. Ik heb op een andere site (weet niet meer welke) de reactie van iemand gelezen die beweert dat de popup wel de sb700 aanstuurt.

Nu voor mij geen probleem, met nieuwjaar koop ik de sb700 en zal ik het zelf wel zien.

Meten is weten (of hoe ging dat gezegde ookal weer).
Waar jouw gedachtengang wel goed op koers ligt is die SB-700, die heeft (in tegenstelling tot de voorganger SB-600) WEL de mogelijkheid om als commandant te acteren.

Nog een punt over zogenaamde review-websites:
Ik wat ooit NCN hoofdredacteur en weet hoe lastig het is om een beschrijving te geven voordat een nieuw product (en het handboek) beschikbaar is. Meestal gaat dat op basis van persberichten en aanverwante publiciteit van een fabrikant.
Een vergissing is snel gemaakt, en de bovengenoemde "bespreker" is duidelijk de mist in gegaan.

Gijs, bedankt. Ik heb de handboeken al gelezen en ja, soms is het verwarrend en wordt hier tegengesproken wat daar gezegd wordt.

Nu heb ik nog even verder gezocht en naar wat ik er van begrijp is dat de SB700 is SU4 mode gezet wordt en op die manier zou hij wel gaan flitsen als de popup flitst.

Notice how the SB-700 placed at the back of this guy makes the difference on his outline. So, how did I do that? I just used the built-in flash to activate the flashgun and it's actually a noob thing do. Here are the steps to achieve it:

1. Set the SB-700's switch to Remote.
2. By default, you will see these in its screen:

3. Press Menu button and select REMOTE by pressing OK button.
4. By default, the "Advanced" option is selected, choose SU-4 by rotating the control-dial clockwise or counterclockwise then press the OK button to finalize.
5. Press Menu button again to go back to main Screen. You should see these in the screen:

This setting is enough and can be readily use to activate the SB-700 as a remote flash but the default intensity of light is too weak to be of any use. We have to choose the manual mode so we can control the strength of flash at will. Also, when in Auto-Mode, the maximum distance the SB-700's light sensor can detect is only 7m (23 ft.) in front of the built-in flash unit.
6. To do that, select the manual mode "M" by moving down the slider control one step. This slider switch is at the left-most part of the SB-700. It should bring you to this screen:

7. By default, the flash output level is M 1/1, you can change it to M 1/128 (which is strong enough) to raise the light strength. To change the level, press the "SEL" button and rotate the control dial in the center clockwise or counter-clockwise until the level is changed. This should bring you to this screen after that:


Under the Manual mode, the maximum distance its light sensor can detect is about 40 m (131 ft.), which means the flash gun is in sync with the Nikon D3100's built in flash at a really good distance.

Take note however, that any interference such as electromagnetic waves or an ordinary light coming from a fluorescent lamp may trigger the SB-700's flash.

Tja en dat is geen commander/remote combinatie, maar de klassieke master/slave. Op die manier flitst de SB-700 met iedere camera mee: Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Sony, maakt niet uit.

Roelof, zo ver was ik mee hoor , maar aangezien ik deze flitswijze het meest zou willen gebruiken voor close-up en eventueel macro, is dit misschien de goedkoopste manier. Later, na enige ervaring, zou ik dan kunnen overstappen naar bv. Pottix.
