Missing links in Nikon lineup and strategy
Posted August 10, 2013 by admin
Recently Nikon is loosing ground, the stock plunged to its lowest level position from last 19 months. This is connected with the news that Nikon changed their future full-year forecast due to disappointing mirrorless cameras (Nikon 1) sales, especially in Europe. From a broader point of view there are several mistakes done by Nikon in the recent years, mistakes that are contributing to the financial results of the company. I’d try to list a few errors of Nikon – the missing links in Nikon lineup that are making people upset.
1. Nikon forget to care about the real needs of its most faithful customers
Nikon most faithful customers are not those who are into compact or mirrorless, nor those spending big bucks on D4, nor even those that are buying entry-level DX bodies. The most faithful customers are those advanced-enthusiasts or professionals that in the previous generation were using D300(s) and D700 cameras. Nikon changed the game moving toward new classes like D7XXX, D6XX and D8XX but they completely forget that people that entered into a system needs their tools to be replaced. They do not need pressure to move to other tools that have their own merits.
The lack of D400 or of a real upgrade of D300(s) is a major mistake from Nikon. They offered D7000 and then D7100 that are very capable cameras. But most D300 owners are unhappy with D7XXX. They are complaining of the build quality, of the major change in controls, about the downgrade to SD cards, about the lower frame rate and most about the unacceptable low buffer. I know that Nikon wanted to push gently people toward FX, D600 being a very capable camera… but still it is not the logical step up of a typical shooter of D300. So D300 users, some of the most faithful Nikon customers, are still talking about D400. But Nikon is deaf.
Also, another huge category of faithful Nikonistas are unhappy because they did not received a real upgrade of D700. D700 is a camera that belongs to advanced amateurs, hobbyists and professionals, especially wedding and other kind of event shooters. These people invested hard in Nikon glass and they deserve a real upgrade of their loved tool. Nor D600 or D800 is a replacement of D700. Some people, tired to wait anymore migrated to one or the other. But D600 is a downgrade from many points of view and D800 is giving bigger files for the taste of many people. Why Nikon did not offer a D3s sensor in a D700 like body… or even a D600 sensor in a D700 body seem to be hard to be understood.
So, once entering in a system, part of the people want to go up when other people want to receive proper replacements for their tools. Someone who’s buying a D3200 will look later for a D7200 but those using D300 and D700 need something in the same class… they do not need and do not want to migrate to other class. Big mistake from Nikon.
2. Nikon is ignoring the major RETRO trend
There are smaller companies like Olympus that are succeeding offering nice retro looking cameras. At this time there are so little differences between the output of most compact camera or between the most mirrorless camera… people are renouncing to their stuff not because is not anymore capable but because is not enough trendy… and a huge hit at the moment is recorded by camera with a retro look and feel. On various forums I met for years requests of Nikon lovers that are waiting for something like a Digital version of FM3A. Is Nikon capable to produce such as camera? Of course! But again, Nikon is deaf to its most faithful customers. Ignoring the trends is not a wise way to do business.
3. Nikon came late to the mirrorless game and has a childish play
Come on Nikon! These Nikon 1 camera are like toys in comparison with NEX or OM-D. And are very expensive toys. Some people buys into just because they are Nikon… but not many. And a very small segment of people shooting Nikon DSLR’s went on this path. Almost all serious photographers are lusting for a lightweight solution for their family or travel pictures. Most Nikon people I know are singing praise to Sony, Olympus or Panasonic products from this class. This is a big shame Nikon! Let me tell you that you are not building brand fidelity. Not just because Nikon 1 is not in the same league like the other companies products… but you also request a huge price for the FT-1 adapter. Your faithful customers are required to pay a big price if they want to use their lenses on the mirrorless product. That’s even worse. Instead you have to offer for free an adapter to every Nikon DSLR owner that is purchasing a Nikon 1 camera. Encourage not discourage people! With a free adapter I may buy one day a Nikon 1 camera to use it as a teleconverter for long lenses… but at this cost no way. An adapter to Sony NEX, or OM-D or even Samsung NX is much cheaper… and no offence… these are more camera than a pile of Nikon 1.
4. Nikon is too slow upgrading its old glass
There is no FX prime wider than 24 mm that deserve to be purchased. People need something cheaper and lightweight than 14-24mm f/2.8, able to receive filters. A small 16mm f/4 or a 20mm f/2 could be deal breakers for many. There is no any professional 50 mm lens. We are lusting for that 50mm f/1.2 from Canon’s lineup. 135 mm f/2 AF-D DC desperately need to be upgraded to AF-S and VR and 300mm f/4 need VR as well. A couple of more DX primes will show people who Nikon does not consider DX as being dead. Who will invest in a system if rumors says that Nikon consider DX as being dead? Give us some new high quality DX glass to stop these rumors, please! A modern 200mm f/2.8 DX VR prime is a wet dream for many. Are you deaf Nikon?
5. Nikon is ignoring the progress of 3rd party companies
There is a big hit in the market coming from third-party producers. I’ve heard and read more praises for Sigma 35mm f/1.4 and for the new DX zoom Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 than for any Nikon lens launched in the recent years. Definitely Sigma is changing the game and Tamron is following close. Apart of the huge step in quality and of the innovation involved, these independent producers are offering a very attractive cost. Nikon is ignoring that and is very conservative about its price tag. That’s why I personally own Sigma 35/1.4, 50/1.4 and 85/1.4 for a bit more than the cost of Nikon 85/1.4 for instance. And Sigma glass rulz! Nikon has to learn that a smaller margin will increase dramatic the number of the sold lenses…
6. Nikon charges a lot for an undeveloped product of software
Captures NX2 is the skeleton from Nikon cabinet. Why no more development? Why not a free copy with every DSLR, or at least with every FX camera? Why not a deal to involve the nice plugins that are available for Lightroom? Nik, Topaz, Perfect Photo are only a few examples.
7. Nikon is slow in offering innovative products
Last but not the least… too little innovation lately in Nikon camp. Nikon, we do not want you in a war with Canon. We want you producing more innovating products than Canon. We do not care about the megapixel war. We do not care how many compacts are you selling in comparison with Canon. But we care about innovation. Dare to bring innovative products. You need to step out of your comfort zone and to bring products and features that nobody envisioned yet.
