Nikon Profit Triples on Chip Equipment, Camera Sales

Nov. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Nikon Corp., a maker of cameras and lithography equipment, said fiscal first-half profit more than tripled on demand for chipmaking equipment and digital cameras.
Net income probably totaled 7.8 billion yen ($74 million) in the six months ended Sept. 30, up from 2.05 billion yen a year earlier and better than the Tokyo-based company's 3 billion yen forecast, Nikon said today in a preliminary earnings release.
Demand for liquid-crystal displays, especially in Asia, is fueling higher sales of equipment to make the chips that drive the devices. Digital cameras such as the company's D70, which features detachable lenses, also helped boost profit, the company said.
First-half sales rose 30 percent to 312 billion yen from 240.9 billion yen a year earlier but fell short of the company's 320 billion yen forecast, Nikon said in the statement.
Nikon shares, which have fallen 37 percent since the beginning of the year, rose 1.7 percent to 1,020 yen, snapping four days of losses. The preliminary earnings report was released after the close of equity markets in Tokyo.

Nikon is scheduled to report final results for the first half on Nov. 15.
